2012 Resolution List

So I have started my 2012 list. 

I plan on adding more as something comes along. 

Or erasing. 

Either way it's a start :) 

So here is my 2012 list: 

-Graduate with my A.S. 

-Transfer to a university. 

-Get an internship. 

-Go on a mission. 

-Feed the hungry. 

-Help someone in need. 

-Grow my friendships. 

-Go Kayaking. 

-Get involved with the community/city. 

-Teach someone something new. 

-Go hiking. 

-Make a difference. 

-Start a relationship. 

-Cook more and eat out less. 

-Take advantage of open opportunities. 

-Get on a workout schedule. 

-Racquetball Tournaments

-Kill as many spiders as possible. 

-Check out the local sites. 

-Blog more about experiences/life. 



So as you can see there are a number of things on my list. 

Some kind of go together and are broad so that if for example I hike to see somewhere new, that's 2 in 1 ;) 

I'm excited for the new year. 2011 hasn't been too bad but a fresh start will be nice. 

So lets kick things off the right way and make the best of 2012 :)

Life: One Still at a Time

I've been back on the Harbor since the 15th now and I've taken a bunch of pictures with my phone and want to share some of them with y'all. So lets jump in and check em out: 


This is a picture I took out at the beach in Ocean Shores. The sky was on fire from the setting sun and with the waves rolling in it made for a sweet moment. 


This is me, taken on the same beach, about 20-30 minutes before the first picture. Don't mind the beard, I normally let it grow out when I'm in Washington. Totally the Mountain Man in me. 


Speaking of beards, this is exactly what I would look like if I grew my beard out to this length. I have no more words for this... lol


I love the way this picture turned out. I took this on my walk the other day while out on the Sand Piper Trail. The original picture has color to it but I was playing with an app on my phone and this is how it turned out. I love the way the sun ray comes over the T. And for those that don't know the T is for the University of Tennessee. Since being in Washington, some have confused it with other T's like Texas. Go Vols! 


I will make sure to keep putting more pictures and post's up here. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and you're looking forward to the new year!

Prayer of the Children


Can you hear the prayer of the children?
On bended knee, in the shadow of an unknown room.

A Sand Piper Journey

Today I took some time to go for a walk to one of my favorite places. Out near the Hoquiam airport there is a walking trail called Sand Piper Trail. It's not an overly long walk in but does go out to the bay. It is so nice and peaceful out there, and along the way you'll see some dedicated bird watchers from all over the world. 

Today's weather was just right for a walk. It wasn't hot but not really too cold either. Nice enough so that as you walked you stayed cool enough and wouldn't be sweating like crazy. 

I went by myself, which wasn't bad, but is always nice to have someone to go with and share the journey. 

Here is a picture I took from the walkway on the way out. 


Growing up on the west coast I have overlooked so many of God's creations. Just five minutes away from the house I grew up in I have witnessed some of the most beautiful sunsets along the bay. I can't even describe a sunset from the North Jetty out in Ocean Shores, sitting on the huge rocks as waves crash along them. Everyone always wants to get out of Grays Harbor because they say it's depressing and all kinds of other excuses, but if they were to just open their eyes and look at the beauty that is all around, even in just this little part of the world there is a lot to offer. Find the good in things.

Don't wait!

So with Christmas here in just a couple of days and the new 2012 year shortly after that, I'm beginning to think of my 2012 New Years Resolution list. OK, we don't have to give it that big long fancy name but we can simply call it my list of goals for 2012 lol. I have done this for a few year and for the most part has seemed effective. I don't put things on my list that are so hard to achieve but I do put things that I have always wanted to do and are challenging in some way or another. 

I thought about sharing my lists from the past couple years but I can't find my 2011 list so here is my list from 2010: 
-Live healthier. 
-Be successful with college. 
-Make a difference in someones life. 
-Be better/smarter with money. 
-Go on hikes. 
-Begin a relationship. 
-Get involved in some sort of government committee. 
-Enjoy the little things in life. 

The cool thing about this list is I can check most of these off :o) Some of these I need to re-add to my 2012 list lol. I don't have my 2012 list made yet but once I get it together I am going to post it on here and every time I am able to check one off I want to blog about that experience, that's actually something that is on my list, to blog more ;) 

There was something I wanted to share before I come to an end on this post. As most of us think about our new years list we think about things we can change or things we've always wanted to do etc. I want to encourage you that if there's something you're passionate about, don't wait for the new year, begin now! Hello there! 

I am currently writing this at 1:54am.  

Some nights I just can't get to sleep because I've got lots of things running through my mind. Mostly good things. Usually contemplating what my future is going to look like. I don't normally like to think too far ahead because I'm all about living for the moment but It's also nice to have a small hint of where I'm going. 

In all realness though, I'm not too worried about it. I feel like I have big things ahead of me. I don't know what they are but I feel like I have big opportunities to look forward to. God is good. And I put my trust in His plans for me. 

I just remembered something, have you ever seen the movie Big Fish? Such a good movie. Random I know but I like random and I just wanted to share another thing that was on my mind ;) 

Anyway, I am going to give this sleep thing a try.

2011 Student Leadership Retreat

Over the weekend of October 13th - 16th, Jackson State Community College hosted the annual Student Leadership Retreat at Natchez Trace State Park out towards Lexington, Tn. This was my second year going and for many it was their first time. 

Over the course of time from last years retreat I can totally see how people have changed, including myself. Everyone that attended the retreat contributed something different and what made for an amazing weekend.

I think my overall favorite part of the retreat was getting to make the new friendships and build on the existing ones.  Incase you don't know, I am an extrovert, yup it's true. I am completely a people person, in some situations I shouldn't be bragging about this because having that trait causes me to get side-tracked and procrastinate on my homework because I'm wanting to talk to people! haha. But anyway. The reason I brought that up was because at last years retreat I pretty much was quite the whole time. I mean I said a few things here and there but then, swish, I was back in the shadows (not in a creepy way of course) but I would sit back and watch everyone and take everyones personalities in. I could figure out who were the "leaders" in the group, who were the "loudest", who I wanted to avoid and so forth lol. And even though it came off like I didn't have a good time last year, I really did, because most of those people I became friends with over this past year. 

To be honest, I think this year was even better than the last. Maybe it's because I was more out of my shell, maybe it was because I was in a new leadership role, or maybe it was the people that made it great. I don't know, but I felt really good about that weekend. There were a few hiccups along the way, but lets be real, in what job or profession, what sports game, what anything is not going to have a few hiccups? It's part of life, and the thing I'm most proud about with everyone, is we still had an absolute blast! We let whatever it was bother us for a very short period of time and moved on, and THAT makes me happy. We could have held on to it and let it ruin the weekend, but why? I'm happy I was there with the people at the retreat this year. Y'all are awesome and I love you guys and gals.

I love this picture! This was taken by Kim and then the quote was added by Kim. I think this pic says a lot about everyone, I don't know why, I guess you had to be there. But it makes me smile :o) 



Here is our group pic with a couple of the National Guard guys that were at the retreat for a few hours to help with some team/trust building activities. I laughed a lot on this day. Especially when I beaned McJagger in the face with a plush ball.... (sorry Jags! Love ya!) lol 



This is Lauren (Luscious Lola/Dolly Parton) and Martin (Silver Hawk/Fox). These are a couple of the coolest people I have met. Martin is an introvert and I enjoy messing with Martin, especially because he can take a joke ;o) Love ya buddy! And Lauren, well, I'm not even gonna explain Lauren because she is one of those people you just have to meet and understand why I'm smiling :o) Love you as well Lauren!



This is Alex (McJagger), Me (Grizzly) and Raven (Midnight). These too are also some of the coolest people I have ever met. They have given me so many laughs and smiles since I have met them and I am very grateful for that! It's exactly what I've been needing. I like this picture because we all grew together at this years retreat and something we give to one another are hugs, and even though Alex is not participating in the hug at this moment, we love her anyway ;o) Thank you both, and thank you all for being apart of the retreat this year and hope to see you soon! 

P.S. If I did not mention you in this blog, it's not because I don't love you, it's because I don't have a pic of you and my butt is going numb from sitting here too long so it's time to go for a walk. But I love you all. The end.

Walk It Out

So I totally forgot this existed until like a week ago. I went down to Oxford, MS to visit some friends and see the campus of Ole Miss and we were out walking around and of course there's people dancing, partyin' and all-in-all having a good time. As we were walking through the streets I could hear one of the clubs playing this song "Walk It Out" and right there popped up my little internal flag, dance time! I didn't dance at that exact moment but it did remind me of the video that was taken of me while I was in Iraq.

So the story behind the video and why it happened, call this "Moorman: Behind the Moves" if you will.

There was a day, well, there were many days, but on this day my platoon was on a reallllllly long patrol and we had been out all day and most of the night. We had finally gotten back to out Patrol Base and when we got all the trucks parked and gear put away, we had all immediately went back to our rooms. I don't remember why but I had picked up my Zune and unpaused where I had left my movie I was watching "Hitch". Well it was at the scene where Will Smith is getting ready to teach Kevin James how to dance and the song in the movie was "Apple Bottom Jeans" I think, I dunno, it was a dance song, and I got up out of excitement and asked the guys to throw on some music and they picked "Walk It Out"And this dance video is what was produced after a long day and silly fatigue kicks in. Taking the time to listen to a friend

About an hour and a half before it was time for my Criminal Justice class, I went and sat with my friend Tanis while she smoked a cigaret outside the Classroom building at Jackson State. Tanis and I talk everyday and always, no matter what the situation or the mood, we share a laugh.

But today was a little more interesting. I got to hear a story from my friend that touched my heart. A few years ago Tanis lived in Mississippi. Her daughter, friends, family, house, mother, job, all in all her life was there. On one hot, humid, clear, sunny day everything changed...

I can't explain everything in full detail but to sum everything up, Tanis' house was destroyed by an F-3 Tornado. Tanis was in the house covered up in her bathtub as the Tornado ripped her house to nothing in 12 seconds. Watching and listening to her tell this story and hear the emotions and the words she uses to describe her experience was nothing short than impressive. Not impressive as in "that's so cool" but impressive to the power of a Tornado and impressive to see how she has came from this experience. Tanis lost everything in the matter of seconds. Her daughter stayed the night at her Grandmothers house that night because weather reporters had said weather was rolling in and stayed to keep her Grandma calm. She's the sweetest girl.

I had never heard this side of Tanis' life. I am so thankful that she decided to share this story with me earlier today. It really got me thinking that it's great to see how people can come back from things and grow from a disaster like that. Like I said, Tanis lost nearly everything that day and now, you can't catch her without a smile as she cruises the Jackson State campus. Simply amazing. And it warms my heart because that is the kind of person I want to be.

I hope Tanis doesn't kill me now for sharing this story but honestly, it's too good not to. I hope her story has and will inspire you also to just sit with someone you know or don't know and ask them about a story in their life. Doesn't matter good or bad, it's just good to talk and it's always good to listen.

The Happenings

Hey everyone, 
I hope your summer is treating you well this far! School starts in almost a week and I'm having bittersweet feelings about it. Ya know the whole "well I'm ready to get back into school" but at the same time "once I start I'm gonna want out" sort of feeling hahaha. But anyway, I think it'll be alright, it'll keep my mind occupied if anything else. 


So I haven't really been keeping up about what's been happening over the past few months so here is a small recap since the summer began. I'm sure I'll end up repeating some things and leaving some stuff out lol... 


May
-Elected Student Government President at Jackson State.
-Spring semester classes ended. Grades: A, B, B, C


June
-Summer classes started. 1 on-ground class and 1 online class. 
-Gracie and I broke up. Took really hard... 
-5 week math class ended. Grade: B


July
-July 4th spent spent the day up at Fort Campbell, KY with friends I served with in the Army.
-July 16-17, Motorcycle Safety Course. Now a licensed motorcycle rider with no motorcycle. 
-July 20th went to Summer Slam Racquetball Tournament in Lebanon, TN. Took 1st place in my division D.  
-July 25th - August 8th, flew back home to Washington to spend time with family and friends. Had a blast.


August
-August 8th, returned back to Tennessee and back to the humidity, yuck. 
-August 27th classes officially begin. My current class load = General Biology 1 with Lab; American History 1; English Composition 2; and Intro to Criminal Justice. 




So there is a short overview of some of the things that have been happening in the past few months. I've been trying to do as much as possible to keep my mind free of things, some days better than others. I will try and figure out how to get some pictures on here also, that's my next project lol.

Deck of Cards

A young soldier was in his bunkhouse all alone one Sunday morning over in Afghanistan. It was quiet that day, the guns and the mortars, and land mines for some reason hadn't made a noise. The young soldier knew it was Sunday, the holiest day of the week. As he was sitting there, he got out an old deck of cards and laid them out across his bunk. Just then an army sergeant came in and said,

"Why aren't you with the rest of the platoon?"

The soldier replied, "I thought I would stay behind and spend some time with the Lord."

The sergeant said, "Looks like you're going to play cards."

The soldier said, "No sir, you see, since we are not allowed to have Bibles or other spiritual books in this country, I've decided to talk to the Lord by studying this deck of cards."

The sergeant asked in disbelief, "How will you do that?"

The soldier replied: "You see the Ace, it reminds me that there is only one God.

The 2 represents the 2 parts of the Bible, Old and New testaments.

The 3 represents the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

The 4 stands for the 4 Apostles: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

The 5 is for the 5 virgins that were 10 but only 5 of them were glorified.

The 6 is for the 6 days it took God to create the Heavens and Earth.

The 7 is for the day God rested after working 6 days.

The 8 is for the family of Noah and his wife, their 3 sons and their wives,

In which God saved the 8 people from the flood that destroyed the earth for the first time.

The 9 is for the lepers that Jesus cleansed of leprosy. He cleansed 10 but 9 never thanked Him.

The 10 represents the Ten Commandments that God handed down to Moses on tablets made of stone.

The Jack is a reminder of Satan. One of God's first angels, but he got kicked out of heaven for his sly and wicked ways and is now the joker of eternal hell.

The Queen stands for the Virgin Mary.

The King stands for Jesus, for he is the King of all kings.

When I count the dots on all the cards, I come up with 365, one for every day of the year. There are a total of 52 cards in a deck; each is a week, 52 weeks in a year.

The four suits represents the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.

Each suit has thirteen cards; there are exactly thirteen weeks in a quarter.

So when I want to talk to God and thank Him, I just pull out this old deck of cards and they remind me of all that I have to be thankful for."

The sergeant just stood there and after a minute, with tears in his eyes and pain in his heart, he said, "Soldier, can I borrow that deck of cards?"

The Four Candles

The four candles burned slowly. Their ambiance was so soft you could hear them speak...

The first candle said, "I am Peace, but these days, nobody wants to keep me lit."Then Peace's flame slowly diminishes and goes out completely.

The second candle says, "I am Faith, but these days, I am no longer indispensable."Then Faith's flame slowly diminishes and goes out completely.

Sadly the third candle spoke, ”I am Love and I haven't the strength to stay lit any longer. People put me aside and don't understand my importance. They even forget to love those who are nearest to them." And waiting no longer, Love goes out completely.

Suddenly, A child enters the room and sees the three candles no longer burning. The child begins to cry, "Why are you not burning? You are supposed to stay lit until the end."

Then the fourth candle spoke gently to the little boy, "Don't be afraid, for I am Hope, and while I still burn, we can re-light the other candles."

With shining eyes the child took the candle of Hope and lit the other three candles.

Never let the flame of Hope go out of your life. With Hope, no matter how bad things look and are, Peace, Faith and Love can shine brightly in our lives.

The teaching of respect for America


I found this article the other day and I thought it was very interesting. I wanted to share it with you because I feel strongly that each generation has something to pass along and I think something each generation is slowly leaving out is respect. Say what you want but we all know this. Look at how things were 50 years ago and how people treated one another. Thank you and you’re welcome, excuse me, holding a door open, are all slowly becoming a thing of the past. Sure people still do these things but what I am saying is that they are slowly starting to diminish.

But this article is talking about the respect of America and our flag. People need to keep teaching one another about how this country came about and what we as Americans stand for. As our settlers were forming our great country people worked hard for a better place, and they didn’t complain about it. America is a blessed country, and if you think it’s not, then you need to step out of your comfort zone and go take a look at many other countries. We have the right to speak our minds, and our religions. We have the right to vote either way we want to. In other countries you can and will be shot if you are caught supporting someone different that “they” don’t want.

So this little article I found talks about ways that we can teach our kids and the next generation about our blessed country and the respect we should show for her.

Also, as you read this please try to leave out your political party thoughts, we all know that what this article is talking about and it is not about being a Republican or a Democrat, it's about this country and the citizens that live in it. 

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Regardless of other beliefs, parents have a responsibility to teach children to respect our nation and to be proud to be an American. Here are some suggestions:
  • 1.  Teach respect for the American flag by modeling appropriate behavior. Teach children the pledge of Allegiance, how to salute and care for the flag.
  • 2.     Honor those who have served in our armed forces, both in the present and in the past.
  • 3.     Make friends with a veteran in your church or community. Help your child record the stories these people can share.
  • 4.     Plan a family trip to historical sites that offer re-enactment of early days in America. Before you visit, read about these events.
  • 5.     Is your city planning an Independence Day parade? If so, attend or be a participant.
  • 6.     Display an American Flag in your yard. Encourage neighbors to do the same.
  • 7.     Take advantage of patriotic music or events scheduled in your church or community.
  • 8.     Encourage your child to write a report on “Why I’m Proud to be an American.”
  • 9.     Read about how the first Independence Day, July 4, 1776 was celebrated.
  • 10.  Review American history with your children or grandchildren. Include people and events such as Paul Revere, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Second Continental Congress and George Washington. Encourage children to develop Trivia questions and plan a family night game time.

As your family celebrates Independence Day, make it more than food and fireworks. Remember the heroes who gave their lives to make our country free in the past, as well as those who served in our Armed Forces today. And thank God you live in a country like America.

You ever have those moments when you're driving along or maybe even watching TV and a commercial comes on and you feel like they're talking right to you? Yup, I had one of them moments. Except mine wasn't a commercial but I was indeed driving and The Fray's "How to save a life" came on. I was singing this course and I felt like it was meant for me at that exact moment, or maybe just this time in my life.
I recently have lost a special person in my life, my best friend, and it hurts. I am not going to use this blog to bring everyone down, I just wanted to open up a little.

A random 3:17am chat


Hey y’all,

Well it’s 3:15am on Wednesday early morning. VERY early morning. And I can’t sleep. You ever have one up them nights? Days? Weeks?!? Yeah, me too. Doesn’t help that I have Math class at 8:00am. Yup, love it. Total sarcasm intended there. 

I am going through something really tough right now in my life and I was thinking about a quote that I like a lot. It goes like this, "Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves back up." This quote was the first Batman movie of the newer series. This quote reaches out to me and I want to share it with you incase there is something that is getting you down in your life. If you do have something I encourage you to think back to this quote and I hope it motivates you. 

Well I'm off to try and "attempt" some sleep. Funny how your mind wants to run the most when you're trying to sleep.

Not Alright

More Than Enough


Hello Friends,

I want to share this video of one of my favorite songs. This version is done by Chris Tomlin, although it is not my favorite version, it is still a great song.

In 2006 I went to Briercrest Bible College (www.briercrest.ca) in Saskatchewan, Canada and the college band at the time, Elevate, performed this song, it is also on their first album and it is such a beautiful song. It’s also an amazing song to worship to. I encourage you, if you decide to listen to this song, take some time to really listen to the words and have a conversation with Jesus afterwards. This song really motivates me and I hope it motivates you as well :)

In the Beginning...

Hello Friends! 


Well this is my very first blogging expedition and am intrigued by all the capabilities this blogger cite has to offer. If you are by any chance reading this let me issue my first warning, I am no English major. So sometimes my grammar, spelling and anything else that pertains will sometimes be wrong. I usually write like I would as if we are talking face to face, so if slang words like "ya" instead of "you" or "fo sho" bother you, you may not want to read this lol. But I will do my best. 


Second warning, this is MY blog space so I will be writing about Religion, Politics, my daily life and anything else that's going on in the world. Keep in mind, the things I write are not meant to offend anyone or hurt any feelings but this is a place for MY opinions and MY beliefs and if you have a problem with that then I would like to kindly direct you to the little red button at the corner of your computer screen, otherwise all comments and your opinion's are welcome as long as they are tasteful and not rude to anyone else. Thank you. 


Those are my only two warning for now lol. Other than that here's a little about me. My name is Michael (Mike) and I am a student at Jackson State in Tennessee. I enjoy going there however I would really like to be at the University of Memphis or Union University, possibly University of Tennessee at Martin. I am spontaneous and I love getting out and doing things with my friends. I was born and raised in Hoquiam, Washington and I do miss it, even the rain sometimes. Washington state is a beautiful state and if you ever get a chance to go visit you totally should. 


I am dating a very beautiful, smart, funny, talented young woman and her name is Gracie. You will probably hear me talking about her from time to time as I am very proud of her and lucky to have her :o) On May 25th we will have been dating for 9 months!


Well there is so much more to tell and many stories to share but I can't give everything away in the first post so until next time.
